2023: Goodluck Jonathan and A Nation in Search of National

An elder statesman recently spoke in confidence to a group of younger generation bon the state of the nation recently. He was said to have asked very patriotic rhetorical questions: “Do Nigerians want former President Goodluck Jonathan for nothing? The taste of pudding is it not in the eating?” The worries of Nigerians on the current perilous state of the nation can never be emphasised enough on any platform. As a matter of fact, the level of national disillusionment from the North to South is being captured in the streets, at homes, in the markets, offices, farms, cities and rural areas. Economically, the country has never been this hungry and thirsty since Nigeria’s Civil War. Politically, the country has never been more polarised or divided; in short, the level of regional sessionist agitation has reached a near brwaking point for the fragile peace and unity of the country. In terms of security, the country has never known peace since 2015. Granted that the present administration inherited national security problems, but the government has fallen far short of the promise it made regarding securing the country and it’s over 200 million population. The state of national security has been going from bad to worse and to worst. There is unending insurgency in the North-East, banditry and kidnapping in the North-West, farmers versus herders clashes in the North-Central, kidnapping and highway robberies in the Southern parts of the country. It is a fact that many Nigerians now do not feel safe travelling from state to state, even in intra-city travels. These are indeed not the best of times for the country. The biggest of these is the grave general concern that, how can the country go into a crusial transition with all these excess baggages? That is why the coming 2023 Presidential Election is most crucial for the survival of our country’s democracy. Most importantly, that is why the choice of who becomes the next president to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari comes in.The answer(s) to the above questions, as many ethnic nationalities in the country have rightly noted, is President Jonathan. The country needs to rebuild it’s national confidence and pride which only GEJ has the credentials to deliver. There is however a recent development which indicates thatt the North is not ready to allow the presidency to rotate back to the south after President Muhammadu Buhari completes his second tenure in 2023. This should not be taken as the truest feelings in the North. The truth is that we on the North are tired of the crop of leaders the region has produced in recent times, in fact more than the perception in other parts of the country. It is very obvious that the way an average Northerner feels about the present governance system is that of exclusion. The fact that President Buhari is from the North has not made the region fared better or given the region any socio-economic advantage in any way. All the economic and social development indices are there for all to see.In other words, the North actually benefits more from the president of Southern extraction than from the North and it is a historical fact.It is very obvious that since democracy returned to Nigeria in 1999, the North has been playing wrong politics by default and the most unfortunate thing is that it has made the region look like a public enemy to the rest of Nigeria. Obviously, the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has given the rest of Nigeria and the global audience watching the events going in the country reasons to believe that we the core North are the problems of Nigeria. From economic, political and religious perspectives, we have wrongly projected ourselves, defaced our values because we corrupted it with greed, arrogance and inordinate quest for power at all cost. The value that is currently being advanced by the new leaders of the region is disruptive, haughty and does not encourage any fair

Nasiha in, Gusau Out, as Zamfara Assembly Impeaches Deputy Governor

The Zamfara State House of Assembly, yesterday impeached the state’s Deputy Governor, Mahdi Aliyu Gusau.

Immediately Gusau was impeached, Governor Bello Mohammed Matawalle of the state, nominated Senator Hassan Muhammad Nasiha as the new deputy governor, who has since been sworn in by the chief judge of the state, Justice Kulu Aliyu.

Interestingly, the impeachment is against a subsisting court order from a Federal High Court, Abuja, which ordered all parties in the suit before the court to maintain status quo ante pending the determination of the case

The face off between Mattawella and Gusau, started last year, when the governor defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) but he refused to defect along with him.

Although the deputy governor, son on a former National Security Adviser (NSA), was absent on Tuesday as the seven-man panel investigating alleged gross misconduct and abuse of office against him, the panel went ahead to close hearing.

The impeachment was conducted by 20 out of the 21 members of the assembly, who voted in favour of the motion. This happened three hours after the seven man panel submitted its report.

Seven witnesses appeared at the panel, headed by Justice Halidu Tanko, which began sitting at the State High Court 4, Gusau on Monday, February 21.

The deputy governor was not only absent, he was also not represented by any legal counsel throughout the sitting.

Speaking at the end of the sitting, Tanko lauded members of the public for their support during the two-day sitting.

Also, Justice Abdul Ibrahim (SAN), a member of the panel, assured of free and fair investigation.

“Our work will be strictly on constitutional procedure. We have given the parties opportunity to present their cases. We are going to embark on our deliberations; our timeframe is within three months. We will look at it critically and when the report is ready, we will present it to the state House of Assembly,” he said.

Meanwhile, the nomination of Senator Nasiha, our correspondent gathered, was made within minutes of the impeachment of the deputy governor.

The governor had sent a letter to the assembly, seeking the screening of Nasiha.

Speaker, Honourable Nasiru Muazu Magarya, read the governor’s letter at plenary on Wednesday.

The deputy governor-nominee was first elected a senator in 2007, and currently represents Zamfara Central in the National Assembly.

He lost his seat to Senator Kabiru Marafa in 2011, but returned to the red chamber in 2019,when the Supreme Court voided the elections of the candidates of All Progressives Congress, following their failure to conduct primaries in the state.

He was elected to the Senate the second time on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

However, reacting to the development, the Zamfara State chapter of Peoples Democratic party (PDP), has condemned the impeachment of Gusau .

Speaking to our correspondent in a telephone conversation, secretary of the party in the state, Farouk Ahmed Gusau, said the action of the state House of Assembly, whom he described as a puppet of Matawalle, was unlawful and capable of causing security breach in the state.

Ahmed further asked how a charcoal could call pot black, stressing that if the assembly was to investigate the deputy governor on financial impropriety, they should also investigate the governor, whom he said had collected unaccounted over thirty billion naira for security votes.

“One of the permanent secretary that was posted to the office of deputy governor that came to testify before the panel is a retired federal civil servant, so you can see their illegality,” he said.

Pointing out that the case was already in court, he stressed that the deputy governor would be vindicated and reinstated, and therefore, appealed to the judiciary to expedite action on the matter so that justice would take its course.

You most know…

For average Nigerian men, they see no big deal about childbirth. They show this by trying to make love with their wives immediately after childbirth. What they do not know is that a woman’s body is still delicate just after giving birth. What a man needs to do for his wife at that time is emotional support. Instead of giving emotional support, the man would want to make love to his woman. Gynaecologist has warned that this is wrong. There are many reasons why gynaecologists are warning against it. If you love your woman and her health then you would support her and wait till she recovers. According to a gynaecologist, she made us realise the period a woman just gave birth is delicate. She should be allowed to rest for at least 42 days before a man would want to make love with his wife. Forcing a woman to make love immediately after birth could be dangerous to her health.
There may be complications after giving birth that would need time to heal up. Forcing her to make love could lead to bleeding. Not only bleeding but, infections may set in. At this moment, she would also not enjoy it and would only give her pain. Breaking down of the perineal may also occur. These are reasons why need to give them time before we make love with them.
